Reinassance of Democracy in Egypt

Andrès Abad Pacheco

Recently, I have the chance to visist Egypt, hosted by the NGO Oyoun Masr Association for Cultural & Social Development (OMA), which kindly invited me to be part of a nice dream, the Civilization Ambassadors Winter Camp (CAWC). As it is quoted in the webpage: "Egypt is going through a transitional phase and is definitely in a dire need of worldwide support and the super powers to ensure the application of democracy and freedom".

The most important lessons I learnt during my short but intensive stage in Egypt are closely related with the direct involvement of people, normal people from all social classes and social - economic level, fighting for freedom, to let Egypt turn into a real democracy as we understand it in the "civilized" Europe.

Some of the people I met were absolutely convinced of the final success of this new revolution, because they feel the spirit of freedom in everything they do, from the early morning when the wake up to go to schools, to universities, to the job place, until the evening, with the sound of the muezzin calling the believers from a minaret...

Why is this new revolution in Egypt and the rest of the MEDA countries so important? The best quote was provided by a participant of the CAWC, coming from Pakistan, expressing with passion how the people in his country are following what is happening in Egypt, how the revolution in Egypt is becoming a new Lighthouse of Alexandria for the rest of the Arab world, not only in North Africa, in Middle West, but in Asia too.

The population in Egypt has raised awareness of the current situation: as it happened in the Pharaonic Era, Egypt is becoming again the centre of the known Universe, moreover if we consider the special attention mass media have given to everything (good and not so good) happened during last months in the Land of Cleopatra, Ramesses, Tutankhamun, Nefertiti... historical characters that remain in our memories with a special light and magic, regarding fantastic tales of mummies, hidden treasures, curses, etc...

But, what is really happening right now in Egypt?

As we commented during the CAWC activity, mankind history is re - written during present days and we are lucky witnesses of this historical event.

So, try to see beyong the bloody news (like the unfortunated event in Port Said) or the political news... try to see the Egyptian people as the new ambassadors or a new era in the Arab World.
